Southampton International Airport Information

Stoneham Farm in 1917 was requisitioned by the War Office to build hangars to accommodate men from the US Navy who were arriving to support the war effort. The unfinished site was subsequently given to the US Navy to be used as a staging area for bombing operations in Northern Europe.

At the end of the First World War the site was taken over by shipping companies, it was not until 1932 when Southampton Corporation purchased Atlantic Park that the field was developed into Southampton Municipal Airport.

The base was famous for the maiden flight of the prototype Spitfire K5054 piloted by Captain Joseph Summers in March 1936. The Spitfire and Hurricane became legendary aircraft for defending the United Kingdom in the Battle of Britain.

Spitfires where designed and built at nearby Woolston and assembled and tested at the airbase.

After the war the airport began offering regular services to the Channel Islands.

In the 1960's the airport was purchased by Mr J. N. Somers, who made many improvements to the site, including a new 1723 metre concrete runway.

In the 1970's despite a fall in passenger numbers a new tower building was constructed.

In the 1990's BAA purchased the airport and made many developments. Including two new business parks, and modernising the terminal buildings. The "New Southampton Airport" was reopened in 1994 by HRH the Duke of York.

Today the airport is used by the following airlines and tour package operators: Aurigny Air Services, Eastern Airways, Flybe, Inghams, Canterbury Travel, Skybus, Air France and Aer Arann.
